Teacher appreciation: Our role in encouraging excellence

Quick Read By Jacqueline Adams Correspondent Great teachers have a passion for their subject matter, and communicating that passion stays with students for decades. My friend Marco’s high school forensics teacher is a good example. He emailed: “Bonnie Miller pushed us out of our comfort zones, inspired us to think creatively, write fast and fearlessly, and speak extemporaneously in events ranging from SPAR [spontaneous argumentation] to impromptu speaking – five minutes to prepare a five-minute talk on a random topic that we picked from a hat.” Why We Wrote This Our columnist collects stories about great teachers. She’s learned what makes them so memorable – and how each of us can support that kind of greatness.

Filling in the Blanks with Dr Gregory Hutchings, Ed D: Recognizing our ACPS Teachers | Alexandria Times

Dr. Gregory Hutchings Ed.D. (Photo Credit: Susan Hale Thomas/ACPS) This past week, we celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week. It is more important than ever that we thank our teachers for continuing to provide our students with an innovative and rewarding educational experience while navigating teaching through the dual pandemic of COVID-19 and systemic racism. This school year has been, by far, one of the most turbulent years for those in the teaching profession. Almost overnight, teachers had to reimagine what teaching and learning would look like in a virtual environment. At the same time, they had to suddenly learn new technologies, find creative ways to engage with students and keep communication lines open with families. I have seen Alexandria City Public Schools teachers serve as lifelines for students for far more than schoolwork. Let us give teachers a virtual high-five and let them know we appreciate them.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Woburn Memorial High School thanks teachers, nurses

Woburn Memorial High School Principal Jessica Callanan Each year National Teacher Appreciation Week and Nurses’ Day takes place in the first week of May, and each year the administration at Woburn Memorial High School extends appreciation to teachers and nurses with tokens of gratitude throughout the week. In a typical year these small gestures of gratitude can seem somewhat insignificant in light of all that our teachers and nurses do. When considering the challenges facing school faculty since last March, this week of appreciation for both teachers and nurses is even more poignant. As such, the WMHS administration would like to applaud our faculty for their habitual and immeasurable flexibility, innovation and empathy for the high school students, and especially since last March.
