A JOINT campaign has been launched by the National Sheep Association (NSA) and the RSPCA to cut the number of attacks by dogs on livestock.
Officials from both organisations say sheep worrying by dogs is a serious issue for sheep farmers, often resulting in injuries and death of affected sheep, with spring a peak time for incidents as fields are full of heavily pregnant ewes at risk of miscarriage and newborn lambs which can become separated from their mothers when stressed.

Dr Roger Draycott, who organised the count, said “We could not be more delighted with the response to this year’s GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. Despite much of the country being blanketed in snow during the count (5-21 February) participation has shot up, with 2,500 counts returned, representing a

Sheep and pig producers in Northern Ireland are set to receive more than £3m later this year in compensation for poor prices related to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Agriculture minister Edwin Poots has confirmed sheep farmers who have been affected by poor wool prices following the crash in the global market will receive up to £1.27m in financial support.
And pig producers are set for a £2m payout to compensate for last year’s collapse in the cull sow market.
“Over the past year, I have met with representatives of the sheep and wool sectors on a regular basis to discuss the impact of the pandemic on the global wool market,” said Mr Poots.

The bitterly cold weather comes after a sunny bank holiday weekend when a high of 17.9C was recorded at Pershore, Worcestershire, on Easter Sunday.
The Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said the cold weather was not particularly unusual as snow is more common at Easter than over Christmas. “But it is a big contrast to the mild weather we’ve seen over the last couple of days,” he said.
“For much of the day today, most of the wintry showers or snow showers will be in the north, and then starting to extend a bit more south tonight into tomorrow. We’ve got warnings for snow and ice for Northern Ireland and Wales that come into force as we go into the evening, and further warnings for snow across Scotland tomorrow as well.”
