Student represents WSU independently in college rodeo

Even though WSU does not have a rodeo team, one freshman is following in her parents’ footsteps and representing WSU as an independent rider.  “I’ve done [rodeo] since I was walking,” said Josie Goodrich, freshman criminal justice and multimedia journalism double major. “Both my parents professionally rodeo … my little brother rodeos, our whole family.” Goodrich is currently ranked in the top 15 for both women’s events in the northwest region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, according to the NIRA website. There are two women’s events in rodeo, Goodrich said. Barrel racing involves riding a horse around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern, and the fastest rider wins. Breakaway roping involves riding after a calf and roping it. Similarly, the fastest person to rope the calf wins.
