The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi on Thursday commended the Federal Government for the establishment of a 774,000 special jobs scheme, saying a total of 16,000 employments will be generated in Ekiti alone with a sum of N960 million injected into the state’s economy.
Fayemi canvassed for the extension of the scheme beyond the three months specified period to enable a greater number of people to benefit from the scheme.
In the same vein, the Minister of Trade, Investment and Industry and the first executive Governor of Ekiti State, Chief Niyi Adebayo, described the programme as a landmark policy targeted at mitigating poverty and tackle the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nigeria’s Foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama has flagged-off the Federal Government’s Extended Special Public Works, SPW, programme, targeted at 774,000 youths across the country.
The job scheme, being engineered by the National Directorate of Employment [NDE] for unskilled, semi-skilled and unemployed graduates in every State of the federation, provides jobs for 1,000 youths per local government.
17,000 youths have been selected to benefit from the scheme in Enugu State.
Speaking at the Michael Okpara Square venue of the event, Onyeama, who stood in for President Muhammadu Buhari, disclosed that the exercise is part of the measures devised by the present administration to lift many Nigerians, especially the vulnerable out of poverty.

Just like the Senate, the House of Representatives on Tuesday declined comments on the decision by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to ignore the resolutions of the National Assembly seeking a reversal of the sacking of Dr Nasiru Argungu, as the Director General of the National Directorate of Employment.
The Presidency had on Monday announced that Buhari had approved the appointment of Abubakar Fikpo as the acting Director-General of the NDE pending the appointment of a substantive DG.
The Senate had on December 10, 2020; and the House on December 15, 2020, urged Buhari to rescind the presidential directive sacking the former NDE DG. Buhari had, instead, directed Keyamo, who supervises the NDE, to nominate an acting DG for the agency.

The implementation of the gigantic pilot project programme, which would be coordinated by constituted state committees, is to cost N46.44 billion. It is actually N52 billion, if the costs of administration and logistics are added. And already, the funds were appropriated in the 2020 budget.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment, through its parastatal, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), is leading the implementation for the recruitment of the beneficiaries and executing its mandate which is slated to last for three months.
The federal government had on July 7, 2020, announced the commencement of the programme.
But immediately, misunderstandings erupted between the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Assembly regarding the implementing body.
