Amazon Web Services has unveiled in Australia a program offering more than $6500 in AWS credits to select organisations and partners to help them prepare for natural and man-made disasters.
Provided to eligible local government, education and small community organisations, customers and partners, AWS Project Resilience is a $US5000 ($6649) offer to support disaster response services, such as those on the front lines including police, fire, and emergency responders.
The announcement follows findings from the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements, which noted that as natural disasters become more frequent and severe, technology will play an increasingly important role in facilitating resilience and recovery.

Easing regulatory burden on charities
Australian charities hit hard by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic will receive relief from burdensome financial reporting requirements under an agreement signed by all Federal, state and territory treasurers.
Inconsistent and outdated regulations across jurisdictions create an estimated regulatory burden of $13.3 million a year for the charitable fundraising sector. The recent Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements highlighted the crucial role charities play in disaster recovery efforts, but noted the complexities of operating across jurisdictions with distinct regulatory schemes.
Charity financial reporting
The Council on Federal Financial Relations (CFFR) agreed to develop a framework by mid-2021 to lift the financial reporting thresholds to benefit over 5,000 small and medium charities, allowing those charities to redirect resources to help vulnerable Australians.

CQ can tap into $50m flood mitigation funding
The Australian Government last Friday announced the establishment of a $50 million National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Fund to help Australian communities to better prepare for extreme weather events and flooding.
The program has been established under the Emergency Response Fund and aligns with recommendations of the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework, and findings of the State of the Climate Report 2020.
The funding initiative will support state, territory and local governments to improve or construct essential public infrastructure to better withstand severe flood events.
This initiative was determined by Emergency Management Australia (EMA) based on their consultations about the types of projects that could support the ERFs objectives.
