“We the successors of a country and a time/Where a skinny Black girl/descended from slaves and raised by a single mother/ can dream of becoming president [of the United States].” Amanda Gorman, “The Hill We Climb”
On May 31, 1849, Owen Finnegan, Joe Biden’s great-great grandfather from Ireland, arrived in New York aboard the ship
Brothers. He was part of an oppressed people who were fleeing their country because of “caste oppression and a system of landlordism that made the condition of the Irish peasant comparable to those of an American slave” (Noel Ignatiev,
How the Irish Became White). “America,” Ignatiev explained, “scooped up the displaced Irish and made them its unskilled labor force.”
Manon Voice
Like many Americans, Manon Voice was deeply impacted by Amanda Gormanâs poem at the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
âShe illuminated the power of poetry as an art form that uniquely has that power to be our consciousness,â says the Indy activist and writer. âPoets deeply inhabit the human narrative. They live in the spaces of the unsaid, and they work to translate them and to bear witness to the human experience so that we can look at ourselves honestly and live up to our full human potential. So Amanda Gorman dignified the office and the vocation of a poet very justly. Not only poetry, but she also reflected the power of the arts to really cut through the dross.â

No disrespect to the fashion and beauty industries, but the wunderkind has her eyes set on the highest office in the land. And she’s said as much in nearly every interview she’s given since reciting “The Hill We Climb.” Gorman plans to run for U.S. president once she’s eligible in 2036.
