Several track and field alumni from the Pella powerhouse track and field programs finished the indoor season and are transitioning to the outdoor competitions.
Emily Vos, a member of the 2018 Lady Dutch track and field champions and an individual title winner in the 200 meters, placed 6th in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in the 400 meters and was on the 4×400 team that placed second for the UNI Panthers. Vos has battled several injuries since heading to Cedar Falls, but looks to have a breakout campaign as a junior.
Former Pella boys distance and cross country competitors Nick Bernhagen and Joshua Van Dusseldorp competed at the NAIA National Indoor Championships with the Northwestern College Distance Medley Relay. Van Dusseldorp also competed in the 600 meter race, placing 11th.
They’ve reached the decision due to level-five COVID-19 restrictions being extended until March the 5th.
While elite athletes have been granted exemptions to train, they say the safety of all athletes and coaches come first.
Athletics Ireland are now considering hosting a COVID-19 compliant event in order to allow athletes to qualify for the upcoming European Indoors in March.

These unprecedented times have led to unprecedented conditions in the world of sport. In light of the global pandemic, British athletics has taken a massive hit, with clubs across the country being forced to suspend group training ,both indoor and outdoor, with immediate effect. Lockdown has meant coaches and athletes alike have been made to become slightly more creative with their training, from experimenting with milk cartons as weights, and doing laps around the back garden; to using broomsticks to form hurdles and using towels as pull-up bars. The first and second lockdown have served as a blueprint for many, meaning athletes have arguably felt better prepared and have found it easier to adapt to the circumstances of the current lockdown.
