Treasurer reminds Vermonters to search for their missing money

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont State Treasurer Beth Pearce today marked the 1 st ever National Unclaimed Property Day by reminding Vermonters that it’s never been easier to claim their missing money using a new, online system that the Treasurer’s Office launched last summer. Vermonters can quickly search 760,000 properties valued at more than $99 million by visiting MissingMoney.Vermont.Gov.  “It’s never been easier for Vermonters to retrieve their unclaimed financial property,” said Treasurer Pearce. “Last August, we launched a new website that allows users to search, print, e-mail or request a claim form. In addition, some users will be able to claim their money without the need to submit any paper documents, streamlining the process and helping to fast-track dollars to Vermonters. February 1 is National Unclaimed Property Day

More than $900 million in payroll checks, bank accounts, royalties, refunds, deposits, gift certificates and life insurance is waiting to be claimed. (WBRC) - Monday, February 1, 2021 is National Unclaimed Property Day. In 2020, Alabama Unclaimed Property returned $36,000,000 to people across the state. Currently, State Treasurer John McMillan’s office holds more than $1 billion in unclaimed property. These assets may be in the form of cash, stock, bonds, insurance benefits or even valuables from safe deposit boxes. The assets are turned over to the state each year by businesses and financial institutions that lose contact with the owners. “Our office diligently works to identify, notify and pay the owners of these properties as simply and quickly as possible,” said State Treasurer John McMillan. “Our work is even more important now, during the pandemic and economic hardships when every penny counts.”
