Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said the rise in aggravated assault and other personal crimes is very sad and frightening.
“You may contribute that to COVID for a number of reasons,” McBride said. “People stuck in the same place with people, a lot more crimes of passion happening, we ve noticed sex offenses have gone up. But a lot of that could be because of the culture now of having to quarantine, just more opportunities for person-on-person crime.”
Demika Schlabach, the victims services coordinator for the ACSO, has also noticed a rise in domestic violence cases. She said they had 875 cases in 2019 and 996 cases in 2020, which is a significant jump for them. These numbers are reflective of direct services to victims referred to their office, so that number could be higher.
