The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement is potentially a game changer for the country’s post COVID-19 economic recovery and transformation, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Alan Kyerematen, has said.
“Without doubt, AfCFTA could be considered as the game changer for the post COVID-19 economic recovery and transformation of Ghana, if we as a country can harness the numerous benefits of the agreement,” the minister said.
To harness the benefits of AfCFTA, he said the government complemented the ongoing industrial transformation agenda by launching the National Export Development Strategy in 2020 to increase non-traditional export revenue to $25.3 billion by 2027.

The Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) has partnered two international bodies to equip exporters and companies in the export trade business with the relevant skills to face emerging challenges.
The authority collaborated with the Institute of Export and International Trade (IOE) and the International Trade Centre (ITC) to launch a one-year online diploma programme in export trade aimed at building the requisite human resource for the sector.
The programme was launched yesterday as part of efforts by the export trade facilitation and promotion body to prepare businesses to take advantage of the opportunities under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Dr Afua Asabea Asare, has said each district in Ghana is expected to develop at least one exportable product that will provide the needed raw materials to feed the factories that have been established under the government’s one district one factory policy.
She said the decision was part of the Authority’s strategies under the National Export Development Strategy (NEDS) to facilitate the implementation of government’s industrialisation agenda by increasing Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) in the country.
In a speech delivered by the Deputy CEO of GEPA, Mr. Albert Kassim on her behalf in Tamale, the CEO stated that GEPA was mandated by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) to take advantage of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement to facilitate the development of NTEs to further create more jobs in the country.
In the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality is a giant sleeping industry, Bonsa Tyre Company Limited (BTCL), once vibrant but sadly non-functional for a number of decades.
With well-known brands of rubber products, from various sizes of tyres to tubes, the factory, in the 1990s saw heavy investment for refurbishment to bring it back to life, but that did not work and new equipment have been left to rot.
The tyre factory has now been taken over by weeds and has become a den of reptiles.
Firestone’s withdrawal
The BTCL, which was established in 1963 as part of the import substitution programme, was to produce vehicle tyres for the local automobile assembling industry and the mines.
