As Attention Turns to Black Farmers, This Global Food Giant Pledges Support
Mar 02, 2021
The resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement last summer and fall drew attention to structural racism in the United States, with a focus on local law enforcement and corporate policies. Left unaddressed was the federal government’s pivotal role in pushing generations of Black farmers off the land. Last month, a group of Democratic U.S. Senators introduced new legislation that would help right some of the wrongs. Cargill is among industry stakeholders that seem prepared to act in support, but pitfalls remain.

SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) - Plaintiff lawyers leading multidistrict litigation against Bayer AG over its Roundup herbicide are scheduled to face off against dissident lawyers in federal court in California tomorrow as a judge hears arguments for and against an 8.5% “common benefit” fee that opponents call an $800 million “money grab.”
The fees would come off the top of the nearly $11 billion Bayer has offered to settle thousands of lawsuits claiming Roundup causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a common cancer of the lymphatic system. Both Bayer and regulators in the U.S. and most other countries consider Roundup and its main ingredient, glyphosate, to be safe, but plaintiff lawyers in the U.S. have won several large court victories based on testimony of their own experts who maintain glyphosate causes cancer.
Shallowford Road Walmart Closing Is Representative Of Food Apartheid - And Response (2) Sunday, February 28, 2021
The Unity Group is saddened and dismayed to hear of the closing of the Walmart Grocery store on Shallowford Road. While we recognize that the overall goal is for businesses to reach a level that obtains profit maximization, in our estimation, this recent closure is indicative of a problem that has continued to be persistent in marginalized and disadvantaged communities for more than a decade. Throughout that duration, Food Lions have closed in multiple locations while Food City, Buehler’s and other neighborhood markets have been shuttered. These closures have only been exacerbated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The average age of a Black farmer is between 60 and 61 years old, but thanks to new organizations that support minority farmers, civil rights activist John Boyd Jr. is optimistic in the industry s future.
Though the world has been living in uncertainty for nearly a year with the spread of COVID-19, for John Boyd Jr., living with the feeling that anything can happen is second nature. But what he can t stand, he tells Inside Edition Digital, is the added weight of difficulty he and other Black farmers face.
“You have to deal with mother nature, like today, snow and ice,” Boyd, a commodities farmer, said as the snowstorm last week devastated the south. “But you shouldn’t have to be faced with discrimination and unfair practices.”
