Principles | National Library of Australia

Purpose of Collecting The Library collects documentary resources relating to Australia and the Australian people so that the Australian community now and in the future can discover, learn and create new knowledge. The Library’s collections extend understanding of issues of contemporary significance, build strong community connections and underpin its leadership activities. Scope of Collecting The National Library of Australia’s statutory role is to maintain and develop a national collection of library material, including a comprehensive collection of library material relating to Australia and the Australian people. This role is recognised through the National Library Act as well as the legal deposit provisions in the Copyright Act.

Donation FAQs

How does the Library use donations to its collections? The diversity and depth of the Library s Australian Special Collections owes much to the generous donations of individuals and organisations. Donations help build and enrich the Library’s collections and ensure the nation’s creativity, research and stories are preserved for the benefit of all Australians today and for the future. Research The Library’s special collections are developed to support research and study across a range of subject areas, primarily in the areas of the humanities and social sciences, but also in areas as diverse as economics, criminology, and environmental studies. They document the people, places and events which make up our history; give insights into issues not on the public record and reveal creative processes.
