Right-wing populists are declaring war on “woke” corporations, but in the end, these alleged foes all want the same thing: GOP rule.

The Wall Street Journal published a remarkable editorial framed as a breakup letter with corporate America. “We have supported big business, including Amazon and Exxon, against the depredations of big government,” it reads. “We will again when warranted. But we’re under no illusions that big business is a reliable friend of capitalism.”

Former California Democrat Rep. Gil Cisneros (D-CA) was nominated by President Joe Biden, Monday for under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness at the Department of Defense. The move comes as yet another setback for House Democrats, who had hoped he would as he had been signaling he might run for his old seat, which he lost in 2020 to a Republican.
In the position of under secretary, Cisneros’s responsibility will be “the principal staff assistant and advisor to the Secretary of Defense for force readiness; force management; health affairs.” He will also be responsible for “National Guard and Reserve component affairs; education and training; and military and civilian personnel requirements and management, including equal opportunity, morale, welfare, recreation, and quality of life matters,” according to the under secretary’s office.

But with Trump still believed to be eyeing another presidential bid, other would-be White House hopefuls are in an awkward position. Retreats like the one in Palm Beach are often opportunities for prospective presidential candidates to hobnob with wealthy donors and show off their political chops before some of their party’s most prominent figures. And for now, at least, Republicans with presidential aspirations are wary of being seen as too eager or ambitious out of fear of angering Trump, who still sees himself as the clear favorite for the 2024 nomination and maintains the support of a loyal conservative voter base.
