In order to rent a two bedroom home in Washington, without sacrificing more than 30% of annual income, one would need to earn $29.31 an hour or have an annual household income of $60,966 according to a recent report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).
This can be a problem for the 37% of Washington households who rent, yet earn an average of $22.94 an hour nearly $7 an hour below what is needed to comfortably rent a two bedroom home.
Someone making minimum wage would need 2.1 full time jobs, or work 86 hours a week in order to afford the rent of the two bedroom home at fair market value according to the NLIHC.

COVID-19 is surging throughout Louisiana as a result of premature school and business reopenings, the abandonment of mitigation strategies, and one of the lowest vaccination rates in the United States.
There were 1,503 new cases reported Thursday by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), an increase not seen since mid-February. The seven-day moving average reached 1,107 on July 15, a nearly 300 percent increase from a month ago. As of Friday, 504 people were hospitalized with the disease statewide, the highest number since mid-March.

The U.S. housing market is experiencing a boom in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
LOS ANGELES - An annual report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that full-time minimum wage workers can afford a one-bedroom rental in only 7% of all counties nationwide.
The report explains that the average renter also often does not earn enough to afford even a modest rental home. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 while full-time minimum-wage workers typically work 40 hours per week.
Workers in 49 states, the District of Columbia and, Puerto Rico earn less than what’s required for the average two-bedroom housing wage, according to the report. Workers in 17 states including California, Florida and New York earn at least $5 less than the average wage needed to afford a two-bedroom home in those counties.

NORFOLK, Va. Minimum wage workers can’t afford to rent a two-bedroom home or apartment anywhere in America.
That’s according to a new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
One year ago, Governor Ralph Northam signed a bill that will gradually raise Virginia’s minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15 by 2026.

I came to Pocatello, and I got help right away with Aid for Friends, Otero said. They put me in the shelter, and I stayed there for 30 days. My brother came down from Nampa, and he s gonna help me find an apartment.
Otero says they have been working tirelessly to get approved. We’re hoping we get approved, Otero said. We put in the application and paid the fees, so now we re just waiting.
