Congress COVID-19 relief package falls short, advocates say, but staves off disaster for millions of renters

Congress’ COVID-19 relief package falls short, advocates say, but staves off disaster for millions of renters Orlando Sentinel 12/22/2020 Caroline Glenn, Orlando Sentinel The $900 million relief package approved by Congress late Monday will save renters who without it faced losing their homes, but it isn’t enough, housing advocates say. Along with aid for the distribution of vaccines, the long-sought package provides Americans with a one-time $600 stimulus check, half of what they received earlier in the pandemic; $300 weekly federal unemployment, also half of the previous deal; and extends the national eviction moratorium until Jan. 31. Florida, where more than 30,000 evictions have been filed since April, will receive about $1.4 billion in rental assistance, to replenish city and county programs that have been drained since the last round of funding was approved in March.

Originally published on December 22, 2020 10:48 am According to the Census Bureau, more than a million Texas renters are now behind on rent; three-quarters of them are families with children in the home. Even more renters have little confidence they’ll be able to make rent in January. “There’s no question there’s a huge need for rental assistance so that people can stay in their homes,” Texas Sen. John Cornyn said. Cornyn wasn’t fully briefed on the rental assistance details when he spoke to reporters about the deal on Monday afternoon, but said the goal is to help people who have “fallen through the cracks” of funding already laid out in the CARES Act.
