Letters: Don t be afraid to report child abuse

Children need everyday people to speak up and speak out against child abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and they need our help. Indiana has one of the highest child abuse rates, coming in second in the nation, according to a recent report. Being a youth care worker has given me personal insight into what some of those children go through on a day-to-day basis. Children are being physically and sexually abused by the very people living with them or the people closest to them. Bystanders are not speaking up because they do not know the warning signs of a child who is experiencing abuse.

9 SAGAMIHARA FAMILY HOUSING AREA, Japan (April 26, 2021) – Members of the U.S. Army Garrison Japan community observed Child Abuse Prevention Month at the library here April 23 with a lively festival aimed at raising awareness. “Today is a coming together of the community to celebrate children and remind ourselves how precious our children are, but also to send a strong message to commit to preventing and ending child abuse,” said Marissa Ayag-Garcia, manager of the Family Advocacy Program at U.S. Army Garrison Japan’s Army Community Service and an organizer of the event. Many children attended because they had the day off from school due to a teachers’ training day, and the event included live music from the U.S. Army Japan Band, a proclamation reading, a pinwheel planting, free popcorn and much more.

Apr 26, 2021 April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Established in 1983, April has been nationally recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Children’s Trust Fund of Michigan has used this special time each year to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse in all its’ forms. Child abuse is a major problem in our state and in our nation. In 2019, 33,060 children were abused and neglected in the State of Michigan. It is estimated that 63 of Michigan’s children died from child abuse and neglect during that year. As a Local Council for Michigan’s Children’s Trust Fund, the Welcome Newborns program of Delta County is committed to the well-being of our families and children that we serve. Even in the best of times, parenting is hard, and during a crisis, parenting can be completely overwhelming.
