Current research points to poverty itself as the cause of negative outcomes for poor children, not associated problems such as poor nutrition, low levels of parental education, poor schools, or crime-ridden neighborhoods. Systemic racism in the form of wage, education, and housing inequities contributes directly to poverty and a direct assault on systemic racism needs to redress poverty as well as the causes of poverty.
