Opinion | The world hurts Now what? | The Stanford Daily

(Graphic: AMY LO/The Stanford Daily) on March 14, 2021 After a year of enormous loss and sacrifice, we are losing our ability to feel shocked, or even saddened, by the tragedies surrounding us. At the same time, we are falling into complacency, starting to let our metaphorical masks fall below our noses and banking on the hope of vaccines. But this pandemic is far from over. The structural inadequacies and inequalities that exacerbated it and the horrors we have experienced this year will not change unless we pull ourselves together and see this through. Reading the news hurts; trying to stay afloat yourself while helping others is difficult; but turning away from these things will only lead to more pain.

Freezing on the streets In a city lacking stable housing for the homeless, February s record cold exposed the vulnerability and shortage of options for those living in a tent camp under Interstate 37. March 12, 2020 Under the Interstate 37 overpass on the north side of downtown, Leslie Hester dug through her tent for a washcloth and bottle of water. Still huddled in her sleeping bag, she poured frigid water onto the cloth to wipe her face. Outside, the air was thick with smoke from a campfire a friend had built with scrap wood. Tears from the smoke pooled in their eyes.

Did James Fuller Plymell III need to die?

Did James Fuller Plymell III need to die? Updated Mar 03, 2021; Posted Mar 03, 2021 James Plymell lies dead on a residential street in Albany, Oregon, after he had been repeatedly tased by Albany Police officers. Facebook Share A couple of stray dogs were running loose in the parking lot of the Linn County fairgrounds just after 8 a.m. on Oct. 23, 2019, and Gerry Morris, a community service officer with the Albany Police Department in Oregon, was on his way to help round them up. Morris turned onto a street that snakes past the blank-looking backs of stores and homes wedged next to railroad tracks. He noticed a beat-up silver Nissan Sentra stranded in the bike lane, partially blocking the road. A man with salt-and-pepper hair, who was wearing baggy gray sweatpants and a sleeveless blue shirt, was struggling to push it out of the way, but he didn’t appear to be making much progress. The dogs could wait.
