Young farmers views sought on future use of land

Young farmers’ views sought on future use of land >More in © Adobe Stock Next-generation farmers and rural young people have been asked for their views on future land use to ensure their voice helps shape new government policy. Future policy on food production, net zero, conservation and environment goals, as well as housing and development in the countryside will affect all young people working in agriculture and a new survey has asked for their thoughts. The project is backed by Defra and run by the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) and researchers Rose Regeneration. The NFYFC is working with Dr Ivan Annibal and Dr Jessica Sellick from Rose Regeneration following on from last year’s rural future survey.

Campaign encourages farmers to open up on mental health >More in © Adobe Stock The Farming Community Network (FCN) is asking farmers if they really are “as tough as old boots”, as part of a new initiative to encourage rural workers to talk about their mental health. Posters created by the charity ask the question, before suggesting some of the ways farmers might put on a brave face and avoid talking about difficult topics such as suicide, bereavement, loneliness and feeling overwhelmed. The campaign has been launched at the start of Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May). The charity hopes people will share the poster with local GP surgeries, veterinary clinics, village halls and more to help let those living and working in rural and farming communities know that help is available.
