Worker shortages hitting restaurants in Marion County House of Hunan is preparing for a rough summer.  During this time of year, the Chinese restaurant in Marion is usually getting a bunch of online applications from teens who are looking for a summer job.  But not this year, said manager Frank Lo.  We ve noticed we haven t been getting as many as we normally do and the apps that we do get, my manager has been trying to schedule interviews and the majority of them don t even show up, he said.  Businesses in Marion County and across the country are experiencing difficulty filling positions, even as COVID-19 cases fall and more people become vaccinated. According to The Washington Post, the U.S. economy added just 266,000 jobs in April, a figure that fell well below the nearly 1 million projected. This a big drop in comparison to March when the economy saw the addition of 770,000 jobs.

Georgia, Kentucky, Texas, Michigan and Alabama saw some of the biggest drop-offs in filings. New Jersey, Washington and Oklahoma were among the only states with spikes in claims greater than 1,000. At this time last year, weekly unemployment claims ballooned past 2.3 million. Now, claims are at their lowest level since mid-March 2020. The report comes as a wave of 22 Republican-led states say they will opt out of expanded unemployment benefits, which they argue are preventing people from returning to the labor market. Number of States Dropping Federal Jobless Boost Rises to 22 This week, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Texas joined 19 other Republican-led states moving to drop the $300 weekly federal jobless benefit boost in a bid to encourage the unemployed to get back to work amid sky-high levels of job openings and business hiring woes. The move by the three states to opt out of the $300 top-up which was part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan brings the number of states to do so to 22. Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming all plan to end the $300 boost, along with other federal unemployment benefit programs, at some point this summer.
