Publications Never lose a debate with a global warming alarmist!   May 5, 2021 In this Research & Commentary, Samantha Fillmore examines a House Bill in Rhode Island that would raise the minimum wage. Like most state legislatures, Rhode Island has spent substantial time in 2021 focused on economic concerns after a tumultuous 2020. Lawmakers in the Ocean State are spending a significant portion of their legislative session analyzing the state’s economic condition after an unforeseen plunge in tax revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to the financial hardships of the state, elected officials are also grappling with the financial struggles of their constituents. Due to this, lawmakers in the Rhode Island House of Representatives are considering two pieces of legislation that would increase the state’s minimum wage. More specifically, House Bill 5130 and House Bill 5939 propose raising the state’s minimum wage from $11.50 per hour to $15 per hour by 2024.

Following the financial roller coaster that was 2020, many state legislatures are beginning sessions reeling from budget deficits due to lost tax revenue courtesy of the coronavirus-related recession. Because of the perilous economic situation, many states are considering quick fixes to address their budget shortfalls, even though these so-called quick fixes would likely make matters worse over the long term. Ocean State lawmakers, like many others, have proposed legislation proposed that would hike the state’s minimum wage. More specifically, Senate Bill 689 proposes raising the state’s minimum wage from $11.50 per hour to $16 per hour, by January 1, 2023. If passed, the minimum wage hike would begin incrementally, with an increase to $13 per hour on October 1, 2021. The min

The April jobs report from the National Federation of Independent Businesses shows 44 percent of small business owners say they have job openings that are unfilled. The report sets another record for unfilled job openings for small businesses. The tight labor market is another challenge New Jersey businesses are facing as the state reopens. “The inability of business owners to hire staff is having a huge impact on the approaching summer tourist season,” NFIB New Jersey State Director Eileen Kean said. “Main Street shops are breathing a sigh of relief because they can open, and are simultaneously taking a step backward because there are zero responses to help wanted ads. Suddenly the promising summer season seems less hopeful.”

(WSFA) - Alabama has a record number of jobs available but employers are struggling to find people to work. Cara’s Café in Wetumpka just opened its second location in the town of Pike Road, and employee Michael Forsley said the family-owned business has big plans for the new place, but they are struggling to find people to hire. “I’ve been in this town for about 10 years and just can’t find anybody to work,” Forsley said. “Right now I think we’re staffed with about three to four people for a place with a capacity of 113.”
