High School Student Forced to Cut Braids During Softball Game
Nicole Pyles, a high school student in North Carolina was playing in her last high school softball game of the season, where she was forced to cut her braids during the game.
Pyles, had just hit a double, but it was her hair that became the center of attention. The coach of the opposing team started complaining they couldn t see her jersey number. So Pyles, tucked her braids into her sports bra and continued to play. However, that same inning her hair became an issue again.
This time the issue wasn t her hair covering her number. The umpire claimed her hair beads violated the rules.

A Black student athlete chose to cut her hair midway through a softball game when threatened with ejection.
The National Federation of State High School Associations does not allow student athletes to wear beads in their hair, although Durham Public Schools do.
Hair discrimination disproportionately harms Black students, especially Black girls, in the United States.
It wasn t the first time the white referee had seen Nicole Pyles play softball with beads in her hair, the high school player told The News & Observer, but after the base umpire and the home plate umpire, who was Black, told Pyles to either remove the beads or leave her senior night game, she asked a teammate to cut her hair.
