Letters: Captain Sir Tom Moore embodied the virtues of the Burma campaign

Colin Piers   SIR – What an inspiration to us all! No snowflake he, but an example of the anthracite generation – tough, burning brightly to the end. Phil Alderman Ponthir, Monmouthshire SIR – If we decide to have a memorial day to remember those lost to the pandemic, what better date than February 2, when Captain Sir Tom slipped away? Gp Capt Alan Ferguson RAF (retd) Hadleigh, Suffolk   SIR – If there is to be a medal awarded to frontline health workers it would be a fitting tribute to a remarkable man if it were named after Captain Sir Tom Moore. Kate Forrester   SIR – How about a statue of Captain Sir Tom Moore on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square with the inscription: “Tomorrow will be a Good Day”?

EU shellfish import ban permanent, UK fishing industry told

BBC News By Justin Parkinson image copyrightGetty Images The EU has told British fishermen they are indefinitely banned from selling live mussels, oysters, clams, cockles and scallops to its member states. As the UK is now a separate country, it is not allowed to transport the animals to the EU unless they have already been treated in purification plants. But the industry says it does not have enough tanks ready and the process can slow exports, making them less viable. The government promised to continue to raise the issue with the EU. Since 1 January, UK firms have been able to send only pre-purified, ready-to-eat shellfish - accompanied by an export health certificate - to buyers in the EU s 27 member states.
