Luján’s effort to combat infant and maternal mortality across United States Washington, D.C. – On the heels of his introduction of the Midwives for MOMS Act, U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) introduced legislation to increase access to quality, affordable maternity care through the creation of a federally funded Birth and Women’s Health Center demonstration program. The BABIES Act requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to establish a Medicaid demonstration program to improve freestanding birth center services for women with low-risk pregnancies.

The legislation would ban discrimination against reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers. “Too often, pregnant workers have been forced to choose between a healthy pregnancy and continuing to work with pregnant women of color disproportionately impacted by inequitable workplaces,” said Congressman Steven Horsford. “The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act establishes clear workplace regulations and protections for pregnant workers and ensures their access to reasonable accommodations. I’m proud to support this crucial legislation to guarantee the health, safety, and financial security of pregnant workers throughout Nevada.”
