The National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, described as illegal the recent proscription of union activities by the management of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.
National President of NAAT, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, who stated this in a chat with journalists in Abuja, said that the action of the University management was capable of causing industrial crisis across the tertiary institutions in the country.
Recall that the Governing Council of the university had last week directed the immediate closure of the school and also proscribed all the staff unions in the institution that make up the Joint Action Committee.

The Governing Council of Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti has announced the proscription of all the four staff unions in the institution following days of unrest on the campus.
The affected unions are, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) , National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).
The university, in a statement by the Head, Directorate of Information & Corporate Affairs, Bode Olofinmuagun also announced the immediate closure and ordered students to vacate the campus with immediate effect.
The statement read, ” All academic activities are hereby suspended. This is as a result of the continuous disruption of lawful activities on campus which have endangered lives and property in the last one week. Consequently, to guarantee peace and orderliness on campus, all the four unions ( ASUU, SSANU, NAAT, and NASU) are hereby proscribed with immediate effect.

Labour unions kick, say govt, council lack such power
The Governing Council of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, has proscribed the four labour unions in the university.
The workers’ bodies are the Academic Staff Union of Universities; Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions; and National Association of Academic Technologists.
The council also announced the immediate closure of the university and ordered students “to vacate the campus forthwith”.
A statement on Saturday by EKSU Head, Directorate of Information, Bode Olofinmuagun, titled, ‘Closure of the university’, said the action was “as a result of the continuous disruption of lawful activities on campus which have endangered lives and property in the last one week”.
The Governing Council of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti has announced an indefinite closure of the institution.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by EKSU’s spokesperson, Bode Olofinmuagun, adding that the council banned the Academic and Non-Academic Staff Unions as well as Senior Staff Association and National Association of Academic Technologists in the university.
The action followed the recent protest by Unions in the University, who have been occupying the campus for days, disrupting all activities and insisting their unpaid salaries and other entitlements are met.
With the new order by the Governing Council, academic activities have been put on hold as students are expected to vacate the campus this weekend.
