Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 lockdownâs ongoing devastating impact on the economy, President Cyril Ramaphosa recently called on South Africans to buy local goods.

NOMPU SIZIBA: The TransUnion SA Vehicle Pricing Index, also known as the VPI, has shown a dramatic increase in new-vehicle prices. In the fourth quarter of 2020 new-vehicle prices rose by an average of 9.6%. This is a massive leap on the price growth of 2.9% in  the fourth quarter of 2019. Used vehicles also saw an uptick in inflation, up 2.9% in the fourth quarter of 2020, compared to an average increase of 1.2% in the same period in 2019. With new vehicles increasingly out of many consumersâ reach, many are heading into the used-vehicle market, which has helped to push up prices in that segment.
