Tennessee Insurance Data Security Law to Take Effect July 1 May 24, 2021
A law passed by the Tennessee General Assembly in its latest session will give insurance consumers in the state new protections for their personal, medical and financial information, according to the Tennessee Department of Insurance.
The Insurance Data Security Law was signed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee earlier this month takes effect July 1, 2021.
TDCI said the law modernizes, defines and toughens existing security measures that Tennessee insurance carriers must take to protect consumer information.
Under the new law, insurance carriers must:
Identify internal or external threats that could result in unauthorized access, transmission, disclosure, misuse or destruction of consumers’ private information.
41 million dollars was recovered by the Louisiana Department of Insurance related to 1,500 complaints filed against insurers for issues stemming from last year’s three hurricanes.
Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said the complaint process saves residents the effort of having to take their insurer to court over claim delays and underpayments.
“It gets the result that consumers are entitled to and very happen to have behind them so they can get on with their lives,” said Donelon. “It’s quick, easy, and user-friendly, and as you can see results in a successful recovery in many instances.”
Of the 41 million recovered 38 million was related to Hurricane Laura, 2.5 million to Delta, and 750,000 from Zeta. 77 percent of complaints were related to homeowners’ policies. Insurers received 311,000 total claims related to last years’ hurricanes.
