Senate Democrats Call on Attorney General to Restore Immigration Judges Union

County to provide attorneys to immigrants facing deportation

Print San Diego County will provide attorneys to immigrants facing deportation proceedings under a pilot program approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors. The 3-2 vote orders work to begin on a $5 million, one-year pilot program administered through the county’s public defender’s office. It would provide lawyers for free to those detained at the Otay Mesa Detention Center, the local federal immigration detention facility. Supervisors Jim Desmond and Joel Anderson voted against the proposal. “This is a federal matter, and we should be communicating with them for more support,” Desmond said. County staff will have 90 days to report back on a plan to fund and operate the program permanently in partnership with immigrant defense and nonprofit groups.

Supervisor proposes legal help for people in immigration custody in San Diego County

Print San Diego County may join a growing list of local governments providing attorneys to people held in federal immigration custody. Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer has proposed a one-year pilot program with a $5 million budget administered through the San Diego County Public Defender Office that would offer lawyers for free to people detained at Otay Mesa Detention Center the local federal facility for those in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Lawson-Remer called the program a lifeline to longtime residents and newly arrived asylum seekers alike. “Our justice system should be based on facts and law, not access to wealth and resources,” she said, standing on the sidewalk outside the detention facility.
