High Schools Are Posting Their College Lists Don t Be Misled

High Schools Are Posting Their College Lists. Don’t Be Misled. The rosters showing where seniors are headed say little about the role that money and value played in their decisions. Credit.Robert Neubecker May 7, 2021 Once the first of May comes and goes, eagle-eyed observers in communities across the country await the list. Who is going where? How does it compare with last year — and other schools nearby? And what will it mean for private school applications next year, or real estate values or the college counselor’s standing? Maybe this isn’t your town. But in hundreds of places where the upper classes (and those who aspire to place their children in them) dwell, the list of colleges that high school seniors will attend is often as closely watched as the homecoming score and the police blotter. It’s true in private schools, and it’s equally so in high-achieving public systems.

Will Your Child s School Mandate Covid Vaccinations?

The Eatonville School District in Washington state already hosted its own vaccination clinic for high school students soon after eligibility expanded to include everyone over the age of 16. Ahead of the on-site vaccination day, information was sent to 350 families in the district. Of the 100 parents that followed up, only 50 said they would allow their child to be vaccinated. On the day of the clinic, just 27 of those students showed up. Although the district will strongly encourage all students to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible, vaccine hesitancy remains a significant hurdle, according to Eatonville s superintendent, Krestin Bahr. That is part of the reason the school district would stop short of mandating vaccinations before returning to school in the fall, Bahr said.

Private Schooling under COVID-19: Hanging in, But Dangers Remain

Private Schooling under COVID-19: Hanging in, But Dangers Remain SHARE Today we released a report on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on American private schooling. The paper focuses on what we observed for a full year after the first private school, at least of which we are aware, declared that it would be going out of business due to the financial effects of the virus and attending lockdowns, social distancing, and more. The paper covers March 18, 2020, to March 17, 2021. The clearest conclusion of the paper is that a minimum of 132 private schools went out of business at least partially due to COVID-19. As the paper explains, we have reason to believe the total number of closures is not radically higher than that – likely somewhere in the low hundreds – but our closure data is derived almost entirely from media reports. Closures that did not generate media reports, or that were in reports we did not see, are not on our list.
