As the one year mark of the closure approaches, Governor Andrew Cuomo has officially given the green light for New York City movie theaters to reopen. Starting March 5th, movie theaters will be allowed open at 25% capacity and must follow the following protocol: A limit of 50 people per screen Mask requirement Air Filtration system that meet New York’s standards These social distancing protocols are in accordance with the rest of New York State’s rules for theatres, put into place in October of last year. Governor Cuomo has set to ease coronavirus restrictions on businesses, such as bars, restaurants and wedding venues in hopes to re-energize the economy.

Andrew Cuomo announced that cinemas across the five boroughs could reopen starting next month, a potential reprieve for a sector of the entertainment industry that’s been walloped by the coronavirus pandemic. Nicolaou owns three theaters in the city Cinema Village in Manhattan, Alpine Theatre in Brooklyn and Cinemart Cinemas in Queens. Due to damage from frozen pipes, he doesn’t expect those venues to reopen until April 2. When he can reignite the marquee lights, his locations will be running at 25% capacity, or 50 people per auditorium which means it will be nearly impossible to make money.
