BROWN/AFP via Getty Images Last September, as Covid-19 vaccine candidates were rapidly advancing, Katherine Park and six of her fellow school nurses in St. Louis County, Mo., envisioned school-based vaccination sites as an extension of the district’s pandemic response plan, which they had been working on for months. They reached out to the local health department, letting it know the district had buildings for use and more than 30 school nurses who could jump in on administering shots. “Honestly, our health department here was kind of surprised that we even reached out to them,” said Park, who is also the interim director of health services at Parkway Schools, a public school district in western St. Louis County. “It’s almost like they had never really considered they could utilize us.”

Nurse shortage could make reopening school campuses more difficult

School nurses could play a key role in helping school campuses reopen and keeping students and staff safe during the Covid-19 pandemic, but many California schools don’t have one. In districts that have nurses, most divide their time between multiple schools. The lack of nurses on campuses can be challenging for schools, which must meet a raft of strict health and safety requirements in order to reopen campuses, including screening staff and students for symptoms of Covid-19, testing and contact tracing, and determining if anyone needs to be removed from the school and quarantined. “School nurses should be involved in all conversations about school reopening and student health,” said Pamela Kahn, president of the California School Nurses Organization. “But in many districts nurses aren’t even at the table.”

School nurses keep staff, students safe during the pandemic

By Kristia Postema Capital News Service School nurses have long played a major role in the health and safety of students and staff, but in the midst of the pandemic they’ve been tasked with the crucial role of mitigating coronavirus cases. In April 2020, a month after schools closed due to the coronavirus, the National Association of School Nurses studied how school nurses met the needs of staff and students without seeing them face to face. Most continued to provide assistance from afar, the study found. According to the study, school nurses reported reaching out to at-risk students, becoming health expert resources for parents, holding virtual support groups or office hours, educating and updating the community about COVID-19, formulating student health care plans and developing protocols for safely returning to school.
