To the Editor:
As the current, and only (SRO) School Resource Officer at Champlain Valley Union High School, I am writing to share my thoughts and offer up another perspective from the article in the Shelburne News âTeachers speak out against police in Champlain Valley Schoolsâ of Nov. 25.
It is my privilege and responsibility to hold this position. I understand the concerns brought before the school board, and believe it is in the best interest of the school community to build a bridge to understanding the concerns of students, faculty, and staff. I am truly here as a resource and support for everyone.As the only SRO in CVUâs history, and a position that was requested just a short time ago, I would like to let you know I am here should you have any questions about the position of SRO, the training it takes for the responsibilities of the position, and the benefits of having an SRO in a school setting.

Eight years have passed and the day is as vivid as it was when so much changed.
My mother died at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 in Chicago. I was subbing that day at Fairfield Warde High School, as was my older daughter Stacey, and we received a lot of support from colleagues, which made processing mom’s death less painful.
But how ironic was it to learn barely two hours later that 20 beautiful children and six educators had been murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, less than 30 minutes away? Adding this tragic event to a day already filled with personal sadness, I will never forget the void I have felt for the past eight years.
