Teachers say they must be prioritised for Covid-19 vaccines to limit disruption to the Leaving Cert in June and prevent uncertainty over the start of the next academic year in September.
It comes as the Department of Education considers implementing a pilot antigen testing scheme aimed at minimising the spread of Covid-19 in schools.
Education Minister Norma Foley is seeking a meeting with her Northern counterpart Peter Weir to learn about the use of the tests there. Pupils and teachers in Northern Ireland have been urged to consider taking two tests a week to reduce the risk of transmission.
National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) president Michael Cregan said the tests would complement measures already in place.

The eighth Annual Creative Engagement exhibition, hosted by the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD), highlights the artistic and creative talents of Ireland’s second level students.
The online exhibition runs from today, Thursday, 4 March to Saturday, 6 March (9.30am-5pm daily)and was officially opened by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin.

th Annual Creative Engagement exhibition hosted by the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) highlights the artistic and creative talents of Ireland’s second level students.
The online exhibition takes place from today (Thurs) to Saturday (March 6
th) and was officially opened today by Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin TD.
As schools begin a phased reopening this week, post primary students across Ireland will showcase their creative talents with projects completed during the pandemic.
The Cabinet has agreed to extend Level 5 restrictions until April 5 while also reopening schools on a phased basis as the Taoiseach has said that the end is “truly in sight”.
In an address to the nation, Micheál Martin told the country that the Government has published its updated Living with Covid-19 roadmap, called ‘The Path Ahead’.
The country will remain in Level 5 restrictions up to April 5 and next month, the Government will consider easing the 5km travel ban and may also allow some outdoor activities.
However, any easing of restrictions will be dependent on public health advice.
320,000 students will return to school on Monday, including junior and senior infants, first and second class and Leaving Cert students.
