LEESBURG Ten area residents who tested positive for COVID-19 are among the latest-reported deaths attributed to the coronavirus, according to Monday’s update from the Florida Department of Health.
The latest-reported fatalities – three in Lake County and seven in Sumter – raise the area’s COVID-related death toll to 778, including 544 in Lake and 233 in Sumter.
Details about recent local deaths were not immediately available, due to a change by the DOH in the way it reports fatalities on its website. DOH offices in Tallahassee and in Lake County did not respond to emails seeking information.
However, based on guidance provided by the CDC, deaths are considered COVID-19 related if doctors, medical examiners or coroners determine the coronavirus was a primary or contributing factor. To help with that determination, a COVID-19 test can be given posthumously, especially if a person had not been tested prior to death.

Having started my career as a law enforcement officer, I did not want to make assertions or draw conclusions about a fellow officer s death without evidence to back it up. For the same reason, news of his death exponentially elevated my anger at the Capitol rioters.
