Vermont State Legislature Vermont State Legislature Length of term:   Elections The Vermont General Assembly is the state legislature of Vermont. The legislature is formally known as the General Assembly, but the title legislature is commonly used by both the body itself and by those outside of it. Members of the House and Senate are elected by popular district vote to two-year terms. In the House, 58 districts are represented by one member each, while 46 districts are represented by two members each. The Senate consists of 30 senators elected by 13 districts, each district containing multiple members. The Vermont General Assembly meets at the State House in Montpelier.

New paper looks at Arizona’s initiative process, potential subject of reform next legislative session A new paper from the Arizona Chamber Foundation surveys Arizona’s citizen initiative process and looks at how it compares to other states with direct democracy systems, the shortcomings of the system, and potential reforms and remedies.  The paper assesses the extent to which out-of-state interests influence the Arizona ballot, and whether reforms to the signature gathering process, single-subject rule, and vote thresholds would positively affect direct democracy in Arizona. Proponents of the initiative process highlight the ability to have a direct impact in the way the government runs and makes decisions. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has selected the state s Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill Vice President-elect Kamala Harris US Senate seat. Padilla will be the first-ever Latino to represent California in the US Senate, and will serve out the rest of Harris term until 2022, at which point he will have the option to run for a full term.  Padilla previously served as a Los Angeles City Council member in the late 1990s and early 2000s and then as a state senator before being elected as secretary of state in 2014.  California Gov.
