Clinics for kids, ban on pens: News from around our 50 states

From USA TODAY Network and wire reports Alabama Montgomery: After COVID-19 disrupted two school years, lawmakers on Monday voted to delay an upcoming state requirement for third graders to pass a reading test before moving up to the fourth grade. The House of Representatives voted 68-27 for the bill by Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, that would delay the promotion requirement, now set to take effect next year, by two years. The bill now goes to Gov. Kay Ivey. The high-stakes promotion requirement is set to take effect at the end of the 2021-2022 school year, but supporters argued it would be unfair to force the requirement on students who were out of the traditional classroom for long stretches during the pandemic. The bill would move the implementation to the 2023-2024 school year. “These kids have had 14 months of not normal schooling. All they are asking for is a little compassion,” said Rep. Barbara Drummond, D-Mobile. “I have never ever had a bill where I’ve had

80th National Folk Festival aiming for in-person event in September

SALISBURY, Md.  Salisbury wants its third National Folk Festival, the 80th anniversary of the nationally produced event, to be in-person.  Back in April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced organizers to delay the event by one year. And as a some sister festivals across the country have announced virtual plans in a second pandemic summer, National Folk Festival local manager Caroline O Hare sent out a season update from the National Council for the Traditional Arts. Her team is still eyeing an outside, in-person event for Sept. 10-12. We wanted to update people that we are still hoping and planning for an in-person event in Salisbury, O Hare told Delmarva Now Monday.

Planning in the works for National Folk Festival 2021, city will adapt based on CDC requirements

47abc January 21, 2021 SALISBURY, Md.- After having to go virtual last year for the National Folk Festival, the City of Salisbury is prepping for all scenarios, while planning this year. We’re told normally during this time the city and the National Council for the Traditional Arts would be coordinating with system supervisors and committees, receiving vendor bids, and booking artists. But this year, we are told while they hope to bring some in-person experience, they have to be willing to adapt as the ongoing pandemic unfolds. “So that’s where we are, is trying to develop as many scenarios as possible that can potentially hold the test of time and as we learn more about our budget, learn more about the vaccine, and we get the return of the Mayor, that when we look ahead to September we might be able to envision an event that will be safe and enjoyable for all,” Lora Bottinelli, Executive Director of the National Council Traditional Arts, said.
