On Feb. 20, 1962, John Glenn blasted off into space and became the first American to orbit Earth. Behind the scenes, thousands of engineers and mathematicians worked tirelessly to make NASA s Friendship 7 mission a success. Historical photos show them as white men in crisp white shirts and ties but we now know there s more to that picture.
Niko Simpkins: At the nexus of engineering and music
For Niko Simpkins, a musician who performs, produces, and engineers his own tracks, the most exciting processes combine structure and flexibility, creativity, and rigor. As a third-year student in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, he sees his mechanical engineering education as a framework for problem solving that might serve him across a broad set of endeavors, and for now, he’s more interested in learning than narrowing to any one particular career path. “One of my mentors told me early on not to look for a specific job with a specific title, but to imagine a job that doesn’t exist yet,” he says. “That resonated with me and it’s the way I approach things.”

Demarcus Joiner is currently a senior majoring in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Pre-Law from Roanoke, AL. He currently serves as the 109th Student Government Association (SGA) President of The University of Alabama. With a passion for advocacy and service, Demarcus has previously served as an SGA Senator for the College of Engineering and Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
