Ministers receive recommendations from winter grazing advisory group

New intensive winter grazing regulations come into force in May 2021, as part of the Essential Freshwater package, but many farmers have called them impractical, and there have been protests and calls for the rules to be boycotted. The Southland Advisory Group was formed and asked to look at the implementation of the intensive winter grazing rules. The advisory group included two farmers, and staff from Beef + Lamb NZ, DairyNZ, Federated Farmers, Fish & Game, and Environment Southland, who have worked together on finding practical solutions to some of the issues raised with implementing the regulations across the country.

Wednesday, 16 December, 2020 - 14:05 The Southland Advisory Group established to look at the national intensive winter grazing regulations was very pleased to provide their advice to Ministers Parker and O’Connor this week. Following a meeting with the Ministers in September, a group was formed and asked to look at the implementation of the intensive winter grazing rules within the new National Environmental Standards for Freshwater. The group included several farmers, and staff from Beef + Lamb NZ, DairyNZ, Federated Farmers, Fish and Game and Environment Southland, who have worked together on finding practical solutions to some of the issues raised with implementing the regulations across the country.
