Discontinuation of MCC: US remains a friend & partner to SL - US Embassy

Thursday, 17 December 2020 - 10:15 The United States Embassy in Colombo has released a statement following the decision by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to withdraw the US$ 480 million compact agreement extended to Sri Lanka. Releasing a statement, the US Embassy stated that the agreement was discontinued due to the lack of engagement of the partner country. The full statement issued is as below. COLOMBO, December 17, 2020: On December 15, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) board decided to discontinue the proposed Rs. 89 billion MCC development assistance grant to Sri Lanka due to lack of partner country engagement. The Rs. 89 billion approved for Sri Lanka will be made available to other eligible partner countries in need of grant funding to pursue their economic development priorities, reduce poverty, and grow their economies.

This group included 42 people from Qatar, 54 from Oman and four from the Maldives. They have been directed to quarantine centres following PCR tests. Thursday, 17 December 2020 - 14:01 Expressing his views to the media, Government Medical Officers Association Editor Dr. Haritha Aluthge states that if the public acts irresponsibly, strict travel restrictions will have to be imposed again in the future. The National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) stated that among the 616 patients reported in Sri Lanka, 266 patients which is the highest number of cases were reported from the Colombo District. From the Borella, 65 cases were reported, while 62 persons were reported from the Mattakkuliya and 17 from Slave Island. Meanwhile, 99 patients were identified from the Kandy District, and 94 patients were reported from the Gampaha District.
