ROCKFORD MICH. â For National News Literacy Week, FOX 17 caught up with students at Rockford High School to hear from journalism students there and how theyâre learning to be active consumers of news and finding the facts.
The students also taught us how theyâve then been able to accurately share their stories on multiple platforms with the community.
The âBeyond the Rockâ program at Rockford High School went from doing weekly newscasts in-person to becoming the main source for the community for live-streamed sports, board meetings, and student news, all while being remote.

I receive a lot of questions about how we decide what news stories we cover.

The reality is how we pick stories to cover is complicated.
Thatâs why as part of National News Literacy Week, our newsroom is focusing on sharing with you how we decide what stories we cover.
First, let me walk you through some of the ways stories originate and then I will address some common misconceptions about where our news stories come from.

A 2019 Stanford study found that 96% of high school students failed to challenge the credibility of an unreliable source.
So we caught up with students at Rockford High School where they have their own broadcast journalism program, âBeyond the Rockâ that is already instilling these skills in their students so they can have a leg up on that statistic.
âWe really fact check everything. We don t just find one thing and then just go with it. We are constantly checking for sources and to make sure that we keep our reputation strong,â says Hannah Butzer, Beyond the Rock, Associate producer.

On Monday, Twitter launched a feature that ll help fight the spread of misleading information on the social media platform.
Birdwatch will allow users to identify information that they believe to be misleading or false, Twitter explained in a press release. The company is currently looking for people to test out the standalone section in the U.S.
