The Washington Post Says The National Socialists Weren t Socialist Share Share Trending How should Nazism be classified, particularly when compared to socialism? Are these ideologies at opposite ends of a spectrum, or are they simply different sides of the same collectivist coin? In my humble opinion, both views are correct, which is why I think this triangle is the best way to classify various ideologies. Nazis are motivated by race hatred and the socialists are motivated by class hatred, so they basically are at opposite ends at the bottom of the triangle. But both ideologies are against free markets and both put the state over the individual, so they are far away from libertarianism (or classical liberalism) when looking from top to bottom.

Now, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) violated my basic rule when she said, “You know, Nazis were the National Socialist Party. Just like the Democrats are now a national socialist party.” No, the Democrats are not the same as Nazis so, no, just don’t go there. But, yes, today’s Democrats are far more socialist than American Democrats have been in the past, to an increasingly troubling extent, so much so that I do often refer to that threat of socialism as an existential problem for the freedom of our Republic.
