Why We Must Sustain Electronic Transmission of Results

Muiz Banire This article by learned Senior Advocate, Dr Muiz Banire, highlights the advantages of electronic transmission of election results, and condemns Nigerian legislators for being retrogressive and anti-democratic, by attempting to frustrate the deployment of electronic transmission of results on account of seemingly lame excuses, and in so doing, discountenancing the will of the people they represent, because of their own selfish interests Introduction When, a few weeks ago, the National Assembly embarked on public hearing across the nation in the process of amending the grundnorm of the country, the Nigerian Constitution, I had cause to analyse the purport of the journey and ended up dubbing it as a legislative scam. This time around, it is the Electoral Act that is in the process of being amended. The Electoral Act is made pursuant to the Constitution of Nigeria, and meant to regulate the way and manner elections are conducted in Nigeria. All processes connected with th

Nigerian Senate voting against democracy! - By: Eugene Enahoro

Nigerian Senate voting against democracy! Senate Tue Jul 27 2021 Many political analysts are of the opinion that the biggest threat to democracy in Nigeria is not its peaceful protestors, insurgents, bandits or even separatists, but rather its legislators. Having allocated themselves a disproportionate share of the nation’s budget, they “live large”, habitually fail to meet the stipulated number of sitting days, fail in oversight functions, fail to constrain executive unconstitutionalities, and always place their personal interests above those of their constituents. The Senate recently voted in favour of a new Electoral Bill which goes totally against the grain of democracy. Quite appallingly, they seek to undermine the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and place obstacles in the path of free and fair elections. The new bill establishes two additional electoral umpires, the National Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Assembl

2023: North will make violent change inevitable if it opposes power shift —Oyebode

Share Erudite international scholar, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Professor of International Law and Jurisprudence, Akin Oyebode, speaks to DARE ADEKANMBI on the second anniversary of current National Assembly, the power rotation clamour, constitution amendment, among other matters.   The National Assembly literally rolled out the drums in celebration of its second anniversary and the leadership of the institution did score themselves high, particularly with passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) which has been in the legislative arm for 20 years as well as the controversial Electoral Act Amendment Bill. Give us your rating of the lawmakers? It is actually a comedy of error for them to be self-congratulatory for their two years in office. Their track record is not all that ennobling. Even the PIB that they are trying to celebrate is fraught with controversy in terms of who are the persons to be rewarded for the devastation of crude oil exploitation. And talking of

Falana: N Assembly Crippled INEC, Removed Power to Review Election

Gboyega Akinsanmi Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) yesterday faulted the National Assembly for removing the power of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review election results declared under duress or in contravention of electoral guidelines. Falana, a former President of the West African Bar Association (WABA), also alleged that the National Assembly has completely monetised the democratic process, citing the indiscriminate increase of campaign expenses under Section 88 of the Electoral Amendment Bill. The senior lawyer, who expressed these concerns in response to THISDAY’s inquiries yesterday, decried the implications of sections 65 and 88 of the newly passed Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill on the credible and transparent electoral process in Nigeria if President Muhammadu Buhari finally assents to the bill.
