(Photo: Lombok Tengah District Court Office) Relatives of four women recently charged with criminal damage after throwing rocks at a tobacco factory in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province have demanded government protection. They said they were attacked and threatened by people opposed to their protest against the tobacco company in Wajageseng in Lombok Tengah district, which they said pollutes the air and makes their children ill.

(Photo: Facebook.com/Zulkieflimansyah) Police in Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province have arrested four women for throwing rocks during a protest on Dec. 26 last year against a tobacco factory which they claimed was causing air pollution that was making their children and many others sick. Nurul Hidayah, 38, Martini, 22, Fatimah, 38, and Hultiah, 40, from Wajageseng in Lombok Tengah district, were arrested on Feb. 17 and thrown into the local prosecutor’s jail along with their young children.

Four members of the gang kidnapped her, took her to a cemetery where they raped her and then threw her in a trashcan all an attempt to send a message to her husband, a Salvadoran police officer. Reporting the violence only made things worse; shortly after the incident Norma and other members of her family began to receive death threats.
