When Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot ordered a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) inquiry into the alleged encounter killing of Kamlesh Prajapat, an alleged opium smuggler, on June 1, this added to a number of cases in which the state has asked the central agency to investigate politically sensitive crimes. NEW DELHI: In a clear sign that unrest continues to simmer among OBC leaders despite the Centre filing a review petition, senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Ganesh Singh has demanded that states should also join the fight in the apex court against its order that impinges on states’ rights on OBCs and reinforces the 50% ceiling on reservations.
Singh, who till recently was the chairman of the parliamentary committee on OBC welfare, said that 50% bar on backward classes’ quotas should be relaxed. He argued that there was little sanctity to the SC/ST/OBC ceiling as the EWS reservation (for poor upper castes) has already taken the total quantum of quotas much beyond the halfway mark.
