26 May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a national movement with the goal of raising awareness about mental health. The hope is that, through education, the local Guard community can fight the stigma of seeking mental health counseling, provide support and services, and educate the base population about services available to them.
One of the mental health advocates available to guard members and their families is Trish Soter, the director of psychological health at the 158th Fighter Wing, Vermont Air National Guard. Soter, who earned her bachelors degree in social work from the University of Vermont, has been passionate about helping military members since her time as an undergraduate.

The past year was unlike any other, filled with stress, anxiety, and sadness for millions of us. So perhaps it’s not surprising that many people are downloading mental health apps for support. But as Consumer Reports found, sharing deeply personal, sensitive information on some virtual platforms might not be as private as you think.

Update: I wrote this in 2009, one year after my best friend passed away, and post it each and every year on the anniversary of his death. For years, I ve done this for me. Please take the time to care for one another.
Minnesota s suicide deaths dropped in all groups but seniors in 2020 Suicides decreased to 723 in 2020, down from 830 the previous year. May 12, 2021 11:19am Text size Copy shortlink:
Suicides in Minnesota decreased in 2020 to 723, the lowest number since 2014, Minnesota health officials said Wednesday.
Although that s down from the record high 830 suicides in 2019, it marks the sixth consecutive year when there were more than 700 suicides. It s a good sign to see that number drop, but 723 preventable deaths are 723 too many, said Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm. We are not yet sure what impacts the COVID-19 pandemic had on this trend, but it is clear that we must continue to support people and communities to address the causes of suicide.
