A Phoenix man who initially told police his girlfriend killed herself was arrested Saturday morning after later telling police he accidentally shot her, according to court documents.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., officers responded to a call of a suicide at a house near 51st Avenue and Thomas Road. Guillermo Diaz, 42, told police his girlfriend was upset and shot herself before he could take the gun away.
Police found the woman inside the home with a gunshot injury. Officers pronounced her dead on the scene.
In an interview, Diaz later admitted to police he accidentally shot his girlfriend as he tried to take the gun from her during an argument. He said it was an accident and placed the gun next to the victim to make it seem like a suicide.
