Namibia records an increase in malaria deaths

Namibia recorded 43 malaria deaths in 2020, compared to seven that were recorded the previous year, with the Kavango East and West, Ohangwena and Zambezi regions most affected.
This information was shared by health and social services minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula in light of World Malaria Day, which was observed yesterday.
World Malaria Day is observed internationally every year on 25 April and recognises global efforts to control malaria. Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.

New Era that malaria in Namibia is endemic in 10 regions: Kavango East and West, Ohangwena, Zambezi, Omusati, Oshikoto, Oshana, Kunene, Otjozondjupa and Omaheke – regions that have favourable environmental conditions for its transmission.

To cover population at higher risk of malaria
As part of the integrated vector management strategy, the district medical and health department has geared up to distribute as many as 1,63,175 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) in a total of 501 villages to cover a population of 2.76 lakh from next week.
The authorities have drawn up plans to take up the LLINs distribution drive, which was reportedly delayed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, sources said. The plan envisages distribution of the LLINs among the population at higher risk of malaria mostly residing in the Agency areas of the district. It forms a key intervention of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP).

As the curtains dropped on a rather unforgettable year, the World Malaria Report 2020 brought cheer for India. Reported malaria cases were down by 46 per cent in 2019 compared to 2018. India accounted for the largest decline in malaria cases in the South-East Asia in 2000-19. The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), which has been relentless in driving the malaria elimination goal, deserves much of the credit.
