March 15 is World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD). The consumer movement, Consumers International, first marked that date in 1983. Celebrating the day is an opportunity to reiterate the demand that the rights of all consumers must be respected and protected, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.
This year, all consumers will join in tackling plastic pollution. Our ecosystem is suffering from single-use plastics which continue to fill our oceans. As a global consumer movement, the Consumers International plays a critical role in tackling plastic pollution and promoting sustainable consumption by mobilizing its membership towards this end.

If Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Usec. Benny Antiporda would have his way, he would like to get help from local government units (LGUs) in enforcing the 20-year-old garbage segregation law.
Antiporda, alternate chair of the National Solid Waste Management Commission, made the call for efficient and effective handling of solid waste during a dialogue with Cavite’s provincial, city, and municipal environment officers, the DENR bared in a statement Tuesday, March 9.
“Propose to your local council to create an ordinance that will act on those who do not practice segregation in their barangays,” he told the local officials.

This, after Benny Antiporda, the undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Units Concerns, invited on Friday, Feb.26 representatives from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) to a key meeting with SLF operators.
Antiporda said DBP presented to the SLF operators their “Green Financing Program”, which provides financing assistance to strategic sectors, industries and local government units (LGUs) in adopting environment-friendly processes and technologies.
“DBP showed willingness to extend financial assistance to SLF operators,” the DENR said in a Facebook post, which featured pictures of the meeting.
Antiporda said earlier this month that it’s the agency’s dream to establish 300 SLFs–a key tool in its all-out battle against garbage–all over the country.
