Gravesham council hits out at government housebuilding formula u-turn amid growing concerns for green belt grab  |  Updated: 12:03, 29 December 2020 Gravesham leader John Burden says the council must show it can retain its own planning destiny after claiming to be in a worse position after a government u-turn on housebuilding reforms. Labour-run Gravesham council is currently consulting on its local plan which outlines the need to build an additional 10,480 new homes across Gravesend and surrounding villages between now and 2036. Local authorities are under pressure to meet strict housebuilding targets. The government has used a computer-based formula to calculate the number of new homes that individual local authorities should plan for since 2017.

The request, made by the Victorian Society, comes after controversial proposals featuring homes, a hotel, bar and restaurant were approved earlier this year. Curlew’s scheme – thought to be the first of its kind in the South West – would see the site turned into two blocks, writes Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Clark.

Plans for a major housing development at Cleator Moor have been proposed. Gleeson Homes would like to build a 115-home estate on agricultural land at Cleator Mills, Cleator to the south of Main Street. The housing company has submitted an application to Copeland council, for 115 two-storey two, three and four bedroom townhouses, semi-detached and detached houses on an area which is currently fields. The application splits the housing between 12 two-bedroom affordable homes, and 103 market housing comprising: two two-bedroom houses, 66 three-bedroomed homes and 35 four-bedroom houses. Vice-chair of Cleator Moor Town Council, Councillor Nick Ford, said: In my personal opinion I am against it. There are quite enough planning applications going in here and green spaces are essential for well-being and health. Personally I don t think we need that many houses. I can t see that much demand.
