DACC raises concerns over further delays in screening services - Highland Radio

Donegal Action for Cancer Care has raised serious concerns after the National Screening Service announced that as a result of the third wave of Covid-19 sweeping the country, some screening services will now operate at a reduced capacity. Routine Breast Check screening, is one of those affected along with . However, follow-up clinics will continue to operate. Significant delays were experienced last year in resuming the Breast Check service in Letterkenny after it was suspended due to the previous lockdown. DACC Chair Betty Holmes, says questions need to be answered as to how the backlog of people affected by these delays are now going to be dealt with:

Routine breast screening delayed due to pandemic Updated / Friday, 8 Jan 2021 20:06 BreastCheck is now operating a reduced service BreastCheck has revealed it is operating a reduced service, including delaying routine breast screening, over concerns about the unprecedented levels of coronavirus in the community. In an update from the National Screening Service (NSS) seen by RTÉ, it states that whilst screening remains a safe procedure, we believe the risk to healthy women posed by current levels of Covid-19 in the community outweighs the benefits of routine breast screening. Therefore, BreastCheck is operating a reduced service at this time. The decision will be kept under review at local level.

Vicky Phelan and support group hit back at senior doctor s suggestion that women who developed cancer after screening weren t wronged

It is misleading and not factually correct to say these were mistakes and missed readings, she suggested. The letter has been criticised by Vicky Phelan, who developed cervical cancer after screening and first revealed failings in the CervicalCheck programme. Ms Phelan posted on Twitter: “2.5 years after my case broke open the CervicalCheck debacle and an independent review by Dr Gabriel Scally found that CervicalCheck was doomed to fail identifying serious gaps in governance structures and misogynistic treatment and this.” The 221+ support group also said they were deeply concerned by comments attributed to Dr Russell. They said they will be writing immediately to the CervicalCheck Steering Committee to express concerns that the comments betrays the commitment of Government and operational agencies to a cultural change in CervicalCheck.
